The Bluefield Union Mission is physically located at 2203 Bluefield Avenue in Bluefield, West Virginia. It is a religiously-oriented mission, serving the needs of local citizens and transients who require their services.
The Union Mission offers such services as clothing, food and transient and emergency housing, as well as counseling services and intervention. Additionally, each year at Christmas, the Union Mission sponsors a "Toys for Forgotten Children" program to give presents to underprivileged children who could otherwise expect nothing.
USS Yeager supports the Union Mission in two ways: Each year, from the September meeting through the Christmas Party in December, a raffle is held in which items donated by members of the crew, usually Star Trek or other Science Fiction collectibles are raffled off at the cost of one pound of non-perishable food per ticket. A final raffle for a particularly large or rare item is held during the Christmas Party, with all tickets from previous raffles being eligible. Since its inception, this program has raised from the begininng raffle's 450 pounds to a peak of just over a ton. The annual average is between one-half and three-quarters of a ton.
Additionally, a raffle is held at each Christmas party where a specifically ship-oriented prize is awarded. This may be a painting, art print or model, which is of special interest to members of the Yeager crew. These tickets sell for 1.00 each, and typically raise an additional $150-200 which are then used in an after-the-party shopping spree at the local Wal-Mart, where, among much silliness and high spirits, 30-40 new toys are purchased for the "Forgotten Children" program.
Early that week, trucks laden with food and toys pull into the loading bay at the Union Mission, where they are received by a grateful Reverend Hammond or his son Craig, and immediately cycled into the Union Mission system. It's a great way to get into the Christmas spirit!
